A Simple Tweak to Speed Up Both Firefox and Internet Explorer

Metafilter created a video that shows how to speed up both Firefox and Internet Explorer. It seems that most of the time both programs are optimised for Dial-up connections. Making a couple of changes to the settings can significantly increase their speed for broadband users.

Chris Di Clerico wrote up a nice summary for Firefox users:

  1. Type “about:config” in the address bar. Press ENTER.
  2. In the Filter box, type “network”.
  3. Scroll down to “network.http.pipelining”.
  4. Double-click it and the value will change from FALSE to TRUE.
  5. The line below should be “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and the default value is 4.
  6. Double-click it and increase the value by typing in 10. (You can experiment with different values to see what gives you the best performance. Mine is currently 10.)
  7. That’s it.

Apparently the FasterFox Firefox Extension will also do this.

Internet Explorer users should follow the instructions on the Metafilter Video.
